/  Session Tips   /  What to Expect During Your Portrait Session

“We are so awkward in front of the camera.”

I hear this from almost every single client before their session. And honestly, I get it completely. Unless you do this for a living, having a camera pointed at you feels weird. But here is the thing: it is not your job to know how to pose. That is my job.

If you have been putting off booking because you are worried about feeling stiff or not knowing what to do with your hands, here is exactly what working together actually looks like.

Movement over posing

We are not going to spend the session holding stiff uncomfortable poses. Instead I focus on movement. I might ask you to walk toward me, sway back and forth, or just talk to each other while I shoot. Movement gives you something to focus on besides the camera and it creates those natural genuine expressions that make for the best photos. The ones you actually want to print and hang on your wall.

A calm guided experience

As a mom of five I am very used to chaos, which means I know how to create calm. We will start simple just to get you warmed up and from there I will give you prompts rather than rigid poses. I will tell you exactly where to put your hands, where to look, and how to stand so you look and feel your best.

Focusing on what actually matters

My goal is to capture who you actually are, not a stiff version of you trying to look right for the camera. For couples that means catching the way you look at each other and the quiet in between moments. For individual portraits it means finding the light and angles that bring out your personality.

You do not need to practice in the mirror before we meet. You just need to show up and let me handle the rest.
